Understanding the Internet

To understand the Internet, you must first learn some terms and learn how the Internet works.

First, there is an Internet "god" who controls things.  That deity is ICANN (Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers).  It is a not-for-profit partnership of people from all over the world dedicated to keeping the Internet secure, stable and interoperable.

IANA (Internet Assigned Numbers Authority) is operated by the
Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers (ICANN) and these two agencies pretty much control the Internet.

Registrars like Network Solutions and Register.com are authorized to "lease" domain names.  This is often referred to as "owning" a
domain name.  We use the term "lease" because domain names can only be held as long as an annual fee is paid to the registrar.

Registrars do not have to provide web site hosting services but most do.  We prefer to keep our hosting and registrars separate so that there is never a conflict or problem should we decide to move a web site from one hosting provider to another.  This is like separation between church and state in our opinion.

Hosting Providers do what the name implies.  They host or provide the "real estate" for your web site.  Hosting is done on servers.  These servers can be Windows based, Linux based and either dedicated to your site or shared with others.  Pricing and features vary widely.

Domain Name Servers (DNS) on the Internet resolve domain names which allow browsers to point to a particular web site.  For example, www.trabbic.com resolves to http://64.78.38.8.  Keep in mind that EVERYTHING on the Internet has a unique IP (Internet Protocol) address, even your own computer.  The DNS servers in essence lookup the Internet phone number you are calling when you type an address in your browser.  That is why ICANN and IANA are so important.

What about e-mail?  Once you own a domain name, you then want to point that domain name to a hosting provider.  While you can park the domain for later use, in most cases you will contract with a hosting provider like Intermedia.net to host a web site and/or your e-mail.

We are not here to sell you something, we are here for our clients.  And only our clients.   Why not become one?
